First saw this on Air France flight in 2009 and had us rolling in the aisles. So much so that the steward came along to see what movie was causing the raucous laughter. Wish it was easily accessible in the USA.

Falstaff

Novità
The newest addition to a crowded and distinguished DVD field for Verdi's final (greatest?) opera comes from Glyndebourne 2009. Richard Jones's production places the action in the England of the 1940s. Jones recently received brickbats for a severely updated Munich LOHENGRIN (Decca), in which Lohengrin wears a T-shirt and track pants. The temporal facelift given FALSTAFF is inoffensive, although it fails one test: the update leads nowhere that justifies it, so it seems novelty for its own sake. Say what you will about Robert Carsen's Salzburg ROSENKAVALIER (recently reissued by Arthaus; see review), but Carsen followed through on his impulse. There proved to be a rationale for his transplanting the opera to the Vienna of just prior to WW1, and his production could not have worked in the Vienna of another period, whether the 1740s (as prescribed by Strauss and von Hofmannsthal) or the 2000s. Jones's FALSTAFF is a more arbitrary affair. The Blitz does not begin in the Windsor Park scene,...

Finding Forrester

A HIGHLY ABSORBING, WELL ACTED FILM...
This is a heartwarming movie with fine performances by Sean Connery, newcomer Rob Brown, F. Murray Abraham, Michael Nouri, and Anna Pacquin. Well directed by Gus Van Sant, the film revolves around the two main characters, William Forrester, played by Sean Connery, and sixteen year old Kamal, played by Rob Brown.

William Forrester is a writer who, battling his own inner demons, has remained reclusive after writing a Pulitzer Prize winning novel some forty odd years earlier. Living alone in a changing neighborhood in the Bronx, he makes the acquaintance of Kamal, an intellectually gifted inner city kid, who plays street basketball, loves to write, and does both well.

A mentoring relationship springs between the two. Under Forrester's secret tutorship, Kamal blossoms. When Kamal's scholastic test scores come to the attention of a local prep school, school officials offer him a scholarship to attend and, if he chooses to do so, play basketball on the school team. The school also...

You've found him
Here is another well done off-the-mainstream movie that Hollywood decides to surprise us with every so often. It is a film which examines a curious friendship which is forged between a young black youth (Jamal, played by Rob Brown) and an aging, reclusive white author (William Forrester, played by Sean Connery).

The movie invokes the directorial talents of Gus Van Sant, and there are a few obvious parallels between it and "Good Will Hunting," also directed by Van Sant. To SOME extent, Jamal is the liberal arts counterpart to the math/science extraordinaire that Matt Damon played in "Hunting." However, while he is precocious, Jamal is not quite the "giant among giants" type of genius depicted in Damon's persona.

However, what Jamal is is a young, gifted youth who has a whole lot of potential. The one thing he lacked all his life was intellectual direction. He is well-read, but never had any one to help him hone his writing skills. After stumbling...

Finding Forrester - Truly inspirational!
In "Finding Forrester" you can find no better story! Finding Forrester is just a wonderful, melodramatic tale that is told from the heart and is quite uplifting. Sean Connery gives a stunning performance as an agoraphobic man devastated by personal loss. Newcomer Rob Brown's performance as an extremely intelligent, but held back by his surroundings youth is nothing less than outstanding and Anna Paquin whose performance is right on with her usual high standards.

The premise: MINOR SPOILER

The main character played by Rob Brown is an extraordinarily intelligent sixteen year old living in the South Bronx. As a dare, he is challenged to sneak into "the man in the window's" home and bring something out. Connery scares him out of his home, causing him to leave behind his book bag with all of his stories in it. After critiquing all of his work, Connery drops his book bag down on the street for him to recover. What follows from this point is the development of an unlikely...

Easy Living

A fallen champion
Of all the films of Jacques Tourneur, directed after the war, this film is one of my most misunderstood. Set in the world of American footbal, the film engages in a reflection on the sport and the notion of stardom. Through the course of a champion,(superb Victor Mature), Tourneur engages in critical reflection on the American way of life, the concept of social success. A must see.

Where was the Hays office when we needed it? (And I'm not into censorship)
Victor Mature once quipped, "I'm not an actor--and I've got the movies to prove it." This is a poor soap opera disguised as a sports picture. From its oh-so-ironic title to the wooden performances of most everyone involved, this is a dud, about a self-loathing, each-other-loathing couple who can't cope with the loss of their careers. It stops being a dud at the end, when Vic's character gives up hitting opponents on the field and starts hitting his wife to compensate--then it goes from dud to disgusting. A waste of film, and also of Lucille Ball, who has a thankless role as the team's secretary and implied slut. This is the worst type of misogyny, as the guys are degraded too.

Another Earth

Tragic convergence of lonely orbits
I'm a cantankerous old goat, rarely moved to hyperbole, but I was simply enthralled by this film: totally absorbed throughout, except when I found myself chuckling giddily at the realisation I was watching a profoundly brilliant piece of cinema. The last time I had that sensation was in 1991 when I saw Silence of the Lambs. Another Earth is an utterly different film, but in its own way it offers, just as completely, everything that this medium of film promises and so rarely delivers.

In Another Earth, a new planet appears, close by, in the sky. In fact, it is another Earth, identical to our own. Thereafter, Earth II precipitates, frames and propels a delicate and desolate gravitational attraction between two irreparably damaged people. Irreparably damaged because the only thing which will heal them is the only thing that cannot: each other. Another Earth explores that relationship and, with the aid of the planet-sized metaphor, the ever-present path-dependency of our short,...

Very Insightful
This movie is very well done. No 3-D aliens and nothing exploded. Very thoughtful dialog and great use of the Science Fiction genre to tell a very human story. William Mapother (probably best known as "Ethan" in the seies "Lost") and Brit Marling (who has an economics degree from Georgetown an looks very comfortable playing the "smart girl" role)are very good. Kids will find this boring as will people that need helicopters in every other scene to keep their attention. But if you want to view deep characters in an interesting story, this is a jackpot. I gave this 4 stars but I'd call it a 4+.

Should have done much better at the box office
Why didn't this film do better at the box office? Was it the marketing or, was it was just too cerebral for most of the movie going public. Perhaps the trailer gave the impression of unremitting and unrewarded suffering. In the last case, be assured that there is true and well deserved redemption that comes with a twist at the end. Whatever the problem was, the fault was not the film. But, it prevented this movie from drawing an audience in numbers it should have. And that is a shame. Its failure at the box office will further dampen the spirits and limit the opportunities of truly original film makers. Don't let this happen. Buy this movie and reward intelligent, creative and thought provoking films that will provide a welcome relief to the normal mindless Hollywood fare.

Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny

It don't get much better
I was NOT prepared for this dvd. Diffidently (after all, what does Madrid know about Weill?), I ordered it simply to have another copy of MAHOGANNY, a work I adore.

Can you spell "schmuck"? That's what I was calling myself ten minutes into the performance. It is, simply, the most intelligent production of this "opera" I have seen (pray, be not impressed; I've seen only three others, but I've re-seen them many times).

Conducting: one couldn't wish for better. The cast: not one dud amoung them, not a one (check out Jenny's trill in "Moon of Alabama" - it is to swoon). The mise en scene? Oh, man, don't get me started. It's like a Broadway show; it's like the best of contemporary opera; it's like the old 60's days of the Living Theater. Yet it's too something "also" on which right now I can't put my finger. To borrow a phrase from Talulah B, it's a goddamn miracle. The chorus? Spot on.

Underlying all is the translation of Brecht's libretto into...

great
If you like Weill and Brecht it will be hard not to like this. I'm not terribly critical. I think this is a great performance of exciting music.

Magnificent
Like another reviewer, I was hesitant about a production that was not sung in the original German. Silly, silly me. This is a great production, complete with a couple of surprises. The singing is superb and the staging ingenious. I really love this.

An Interesting Series on the Down Under Continent
NOVA: Australia's First 4 Billion Years Season 1 gives a look at the geological history and paleontology of an important but often neglected continent--Australia. The series is informative and the photography is gorgeous.

My husband and I enjoy series of this type, such as "How the Earth Was Made". This series focuses on Australia and provided many facts concerning the Down Under continent that I had not heard before. Highly recommended.

Paleontology comes to life
If you already know something about the history of life on Earth, this is a great journey through the highlights of that history using examples found in Australia.

Sublime and Awe Inspiring!
Deborah Anderson has delivered a very inspiring look at the human condition of a group of women that work in what is probably the most harshly scrutinized cabinet of the entertainment industry. Many watchers I feel were looking at this documentary to resemble your standard documentary like a Michael Moore film. This film was never meant to resemble a typical documentary and should not be judged as such. This is an art form documentary that is a chronology of the photographic process in which Deborah Anderson produced and completed her new book. This is not a historical documentary of the porn industry, nor is it about pornography, which Deborah herself clearly states in the opening minutes. This documentary is about the fragile life situations that these women face on a daily basis in this industry. The cinematography was superb. The black & white/color transition added a very "noir" overtone to the vibe of the film. Deborah herself looked stunning and did a phenomenal job bringing...

Answers No Questions
This film, first and foremost, is a vehicle of self-promotion for its director, Ms. Anderson. Beyond that, it shows young, beautiful women talking very briefly about their lives. That has value and interest, however, viewers should not draw conclusions about porn stars from such scanty information. This film is not a documentary. This film is a Playboy-type behind-the-scenes of a nudie photo shoot. That is fine, but, this film touts itself as offering insight through first-hand interviews. It doesn't.
I'm reminded of the Diane Sawyer interview of a young Belladonna on Prime Time Live several years, ago. Belladonna comes across as a very lost soul. My heart goes out to her. Some of the women in this film seem lost or, at least, fooling themselves(and the viewer). One woman tearfully said she was afraid she might have "f'd myself" by going into this line of work. I would wonder the same thing.
Some of the most truthful bits of information are spoken by Fran, the Adult Talent...

Highly recommended
Beautifully shot, tastefully edited, and quite insightful. An absolute must see if you're curious about the porn industry, photography, or simply want to enjoy a quality documentary.

Funny Or Die's iSteve

A hilarious and endearing take on the mystique of Steve Job's life
I didn't think it was possible to make a comedy about Steve Jobs but they pulled it off. The movie is part documentary, part complete parody, and 100% endearing. I felt like the movie did a great job of poking fun at the whole mystique of Steve Job's life. Some of my favorite characterizations were of (spoiler alert!) Wozniak as the overweight loser. In reality we all know he played a huge part in what Apple became but he's so often characterized as being slighted for being "too" nice. I think the movie does a hilarious job of taking that image to a whole new level. Makes you realize how ridiculously he's treated by popular media. Another favorite scene was when he has virtual sex with Melinda Gates in his oft depicted barren living room. It's ridiculous turns like this that keep you guessing what's next. In the end, it's not an accurate documentary of Steve Jobs - but a parody of all the ones we're about to be barraged with - and that's the most endearing way I can think of...

This is a hilarious over-the-top treatment of the Steve Jobs Bio
Basically, this feels like a mockumentary about how a network TV company would produce a mini-series about Steve Jobs: extremely over-the-top, simplistic, and inaccurate interpretation that dumbs down history for the sake of "mass appeal" and more exciting dynamics.

If you love Christopher Guest movies and Walk Hard (The Dewey Cox Story), and know some actual Apple/Steve Jobs history, you will love this.

It's a hoot. i
I thought that "I Steve" was a hoot. If you're an Apple fan, it's definitely worth seeing more than once.

Hitler's Children

Cognitive dissonance
Chanoch Ze'evi Has accomplished the near impossible: he has gathered the descendants of Hitler's regime. Placed them in front of his camera, let them talk, provided subtitles, and let the rest of the film work it's own insidious way into the psyches f all who watch it. Perhaps for the first time we are seeing a full picture of what life in and around Adolf Hitler was like as he terrified the universe with his megalomaniac plan for purification of the Aryan race - a plan that resulted in the deaths and tortures and cremations of millions of Jews, gypsies, criminals, homosexuals, and those who tried in vain to stop the atrocities.

The cast then are the descendants of Hitler's murderous group - now adults, forever tainted by the sins of their forbears, who explaining to us in penetrating eye contacts what it was like to be around the monster's court. Bettina Goering, Katrin Himmler, Eldad Beck, Rainer Hoess, Niklas Frank, and Monika Goeth are the cast members in this...

What If Your Family Legacy Was Evil Personified? A Powerful, Yet Effectively Understated, Documentary Explores The Answer
Is it possible to escape the onus of evil? The crimes of the Third Reich are indelibly printed on our mass consciousness even as we've struggled to put them into perspective. I've seen a lot of films that deal with the aftermath of World War II and the shame it brought on the nation of Germany. Those who survived, those who sacrificed, those who suffered, and those who were merciless--there are a lot of stories to tell when considering genocide and torture on a global scale. But there is one group of survivors that I've never considered before and this is the angle taken in the strong, but understated, new documentary "Hitler's Children." What if someone in your immediate family played a significant and horrifying role in what happened? What if your family legacy was evil personified? It's a chilling notion and the participants interviewed for this presentation all cope in varying ways.

The filmmakers have assembled a handful of Germans with very recognizable and notorious...

MUST SEE documentary: "where to draw the line to love those parents?"
I am a big fan of Film Movement's library of foreign and indie movies, and in fact am a subscriber to their DVD-of-the-month club. However, this is one of those releases that fell outside that DVD-of-the-month subscription, so I am just now catching up on it.

"Hilter's Children" (2011 German-Israeli co-production) brings the amazing story of several of the survivor's of Hitler's closest officers and confidants (Hitler obviously has no offspring himself). Just in the first 15-20 min. alone, we got to know Bettine Goering (Herman Goering was her great-uncle), Katrin Himmler (Heinrich Himmler was her great-uncle), Rainer Hoess (Rudolph Hoess, who ran the Auschwitz concentration camp, was his grandfather), and Monica Goeth (Amon Goeth, who ran the Plaszow concentration camp, was her father). Later on we get to know some others too. I was floored by all this. These are REAL people. The beauty of the movie is that the director asks a question (off-camera) and then lets the...

The Colonel

Great Series
Here's another example in the argument that TV is doing more adventurous stuff than the movies.
This show is very well done.
When I missed an episode and couldn't wait for it to pop up on on Demand, I went the Amazon route and it was a good experience.

Check this out- It's Homeland with a 1980's twist
I really enjoyed the pilot episode. It has the "Homeland" feel to it, but that's about it. This is another story altogether. In Homeland, its one potential guy who might have turned terrorist. But in this, the debate is if the KGB even exists, and in 1981, they were beginning to access the threat. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play married KGB spies. No one would ever know they are Russian spies. They live in a perfect neighborhood and have two children. They blend in perfectly. Of course, the children are Americans and have no idea what their parents do. I think this show has a lot of potential. I will be interested to see how it plays out and what complications arise for Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, especially now that their neighbor is an FBI agent. It's nice revisiting the past. SO far, so good.

Easily Five Brilliant Stars (Murkier Stripes)
Having watched each of the first 3 episodes at least twice, I can say that I am definitely a "believer" in this excellent new series. "The Americans" is for viewers who thrill to think and feel "out of the box"; who are able to suspend personal ideologies as a way to explore competing mindsets. And most definitely for people who do not wince at a serpentine/circuitous vision of good vs. evil. Without the influence of the anti-hero trend (Think Homeland, Dexter), this series could probably not even exist.
But on to the episode (3), Gregory: My only complaint is that this episode seems much too short/ a little rushed. An awful lot of revelation gets packed into these 45 minutes. We learn that Elizabeth has been leading a double life in more ways than one; that Phillip's allegiances' won't be played without consequences ensuing. Real spies won't kiss and make up, or will they? Gregory seems to have been the fulcrum of the Jennings's teeter-tottering relationship for 14 years. If...

Drugged Season II
I like documentaries and I found this one very moving. I use it for group and would recommend it for anyone.

Under the influence and feeling the magic will
Anybody, whose is acquainted with my reviews knows that I'm a big fan, National Geographic and when you combined the people it National Geographic with the drug world what you get is downright entertainment. National Geographic's is not afraid to show the dirty unglamorous side of drugs the side that people really need to see they've taken each particular narcotic and done an episode on how it affects your body and your mind you will find them much more entertaining if you play along at home and sort inject or swallow whatever particular drug they're talking about in the episode if you're still conscious it may increase your viewing pleasure although I wonder if National Geographic's had this type of viewing in mind that Johnny has a strong feeling that a lot of druggies like to watch these drug documentaries is it going to stop the average 13-year-old from banging heroin I can't say but didn't entertain me hell yeah remember rock out with your cock out Johnny Irish

Syrup

A very funny & entertaining movie that really makes a statement about brand marketing. I really enjoyed & highly recommend. A-
"Looking at a billboard is supposed to feel like love at first sight but it's not real, it's just marketing and without it you wouldn't even know who you are." Scat (Fernandez) is fresh out of marketing school with no prospects on the horizon until he comes up with an idea for a new energy drink. When he brings it to the attention of Six (Heard) he is excited at the prospect of becoming rich but a double cross changes everything. With the job I have I pretty much watch everything no matter what it is. I usually don't watch the trailers for the movie because I don't like when they give too much away. Doing it that way makes what I watch real hit or miss as far as how good it is. What I have noticed is that the lower budget movies that I haven't heard of are 99% of the time better then the "studio" movies. This is a perfect example of that. I don't know if satire is the right word but the movie to me shows how the marketing industry will do whatever it takes to sell a product and how...

Tons of fun
Based on Max Barry's first book. His 2nd book, "Jennifer Government", would make for a great action comedy. "Syrup" makes fun of marketing, relationships, and business management. Pacing is never slow, it's really a thinker's movie. I could see why it gets a lower-than-i'd-expect rating on IMDB - it might a bit too cerebral comedy for the average joe. I hope more people watch this.

Smart but real
I am that audience member that craves smart and witty writing with a dash of real life thrown in. Syrup is more than just about marketing or the guy trying to get the girl, but the people that chase dreams. Sometimes people get lost in a dream and sometimes people die trying to make that dream come true and for others their dream is seen for what it really is and what it holds. I found Syrup to be intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was definitely worth the $9.99 plus tax that I spent to rent this film.

Awesome independent film
New filmmaker Andy Gillies and team present a very funny and bizarre story about family, friendship and love - completely unlike anything I've seen before. It's weird! But it's sticking with me. Great acting, too.

Love the town, hated the movie! Had such high hopes for this low budget movie. Terrible. A plot would have been nice. Gave up with 20 minutes to spare. You can never get that 1 hour, 20 minutes back. And I usually like quirky movies...

Average
Was a bit disappointed since I am from Oconomowoc. Zero ending as though they stopped mid-story because they ran out of film budget so no conclusion. Humor is dry which I like but very very sparse. Reason I didn't give 2 stars is again bc I'm from there so pride couldn't let me do it.

The True Batman Lives!
After years of steadfastly ignoring the ardent wishes of its fan base, Warner Brothers is finally continuing to release its landmark Batman: The Animated Series in quailty DVD complete box sets, instead of dolling the episodes out at a sluggish four or five at a time! The "seasons" are somewhat complicated to explain as the Animated saga is actually comprised of three separate "series" that originally aired from 1992-1995, with some of the episodes being replayed in the upcoming "season," hence the designation of "Volume" rather than "Season" in the DVD box set releases.

As has been noted, this 4-disc set features 28 episodes including the first appearances of Ra's Al Ghul, voiced by David Warner, his daughter Talia, voiced by Helen Slater, in the facinating episode entitled, "Off Balance." The set also includes the Riddler, voiced by John Glover, in, "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" This release also includes the Emmy-winning "Robin's Reckoning," which...

Millionaire For Christy

Fun and funny!
A perfect couple of actors to pair up..Fred MacMurray and Eleanor Parker. Eleanor is sent to give Fred the news that he had come into a large inheritance. She sets out to win him, although he is going to be married to someone else. The things she does and the mischief she gets them into has them going from one madcap thing to another. They just don't make movies like they used to!

A Millionaire for Christy
This is a cute funny movie and who doesn't love Fred Macmurray!! Give it a try and you will see!

Eleanor Parker's likable gold digger
In the same year that Eleanor Parker starred in the edgy Detective Story (1951) (and was later nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for it), she ventured into romantic comedy territory with A MILLIONAIRE FOR CHRISTY. She built her reputation on the strength of her fine dramatic turns, and yet I vastly prefer her more playful vehicles. I guess I don't fancy me the three-hankie tearjerker. My favorite Eleanor Parker movie is The Voice of the Turtle (a.k.a. ONE FOR THE BOOK), a fine and gentle wartime romantic comedy. This one's a bit more in your face with the humor. It's got more screwball elements. It's produced by Parker's then husband, Bert Friedlob, and directed by George Marshall whose resume includes another slapstick MacMurray picture, Murder, He Says...

Charlie Rose -An hour with Don Rickles (August 30, 2007)

1) This was enjoyable.
2) I do not live in America and do not watch television. I saw this on YouTube which has put me back in touch a bit with the American entertainment world. Thus I was seeing this at a real 'gap' in time from the time that I took interest in this world.

4) Charlie Rose is not simply a very smart guy. He is a very emotionally intelligent guy. He knows his guests, and he knows how to respect them and get the best out of them. He senses things. He's sharp. He did a very good job here.
5) Rickles was here on a promo for a book he has done called 'Rickles' My own sense is that with him the 'live performance' beats the book. But in any case he tells many of the well- known stories here- Sinatra, Carson.

The Demon Within

The New Batman Adventures
These episodes were produced two years after the original Batman: Animated series ended, and were made for the KidsWB Saturday morning block, which was still relatively new at that time. What's notable about these episodes is that the character designs have been totally revamped, and this was when the "DC animated universe" really began, as Batman stories would often cross-over with the Superman series and vice-versa.

The real shame about The New Batman Adventures is that KidsWB basically stopped production after 24 episodes, so we don't get to see the new revamps as much as we'd like (ex. Riddler, unfortunately, only shows up in minor cameos). A host of new villains and femme fatales appear, including Calendar Girl, Roxy Rocket, and the (dreaded) Farmer Brown and his mutant farm animals. Etrigan and The Creeper make their first animated appearances, but only get an episode each (Etrigan was later fleshed out in Justice League). Most telling is that certain plot threads...

From The New Batman Adventures!
New adventures await you and the Gotham Knights in Batman: The Animated Series, Volume Four - The New Batman Adventures! Revamped from the dark deco days of the original series with a simpler yet stylized new look, the New Batman Adventures featured the Gotham Knights: Batman & Robin, Batgirl and Nightwing in some of their most memorable episodes. Introducing the voices of Mathew Valencia as Tim Drake, the new Robin and Tara Charendoff-Strong (replacing Melissa Gilbert-Brinkman) as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, this 4-disc (521 min.) set contains all 24 episodes from the series which include classics "You Scratch My Back", "Old Wounds" and fan-favorite "Over the Edge". Other highlights include "Legends of the Dark Knight" which acknowledges the works of Bill Finger, Dick Sprang and Frank Miller. Not to mention "Never Fear" featuring the most horrific version of the Scarecrow (chillingly voiced by Jeffrey Combs) ever animated. The New Batman Adventures not only refined the designs of the...

Batman Ends
The episodes compiled in this fourth collection of the animated Batman series is from the Kids WB New Batman Adventures, which hit Saturday mornings a while after the classic Batman: The Animated Series was over with. Most of the voice cast was retained (including Kevin Conroy as the Dark Knight), but the animation underwent a complete overhaul, which would be seen on the animated Superman series as well as the current Justice League Unlimited. The animation transformation isn't for everyone, but it works for the most part, and the storytelling is still top notch. In the episodes collected here, we learn why Dick Grayson quit being Robin and became Nightwing, and we also see the origin of the new Robin, Tim Drake. DC character the Creeper makes his animated debut, and there's a delicious new, and horrifying, twist and look to the Scarecrow (voiced by Jeffrey Combs). But either I remembered something deep down inside or it was a mistake to cast Timothy Hutton, who starred in movie version of King's "The Dark Half," in a supporting role in this film because I quickly got to the point where I was wondering if I was reading the film wrong simply because it seemed so obvious to me what was going on.

The main attraction here is Johnny Depp, because he is one actor who can be counted on never to do anything boring and whose flair for eccentricity and his devotion to odd roles is now being taken as a sign of genius. Depp plays Mort Rainey, a writer who is out in the woods in a cabin, starring at a poorly written opening paragraph that is not getting any better. It soon becomes clear that his writer's block is the result of the...

Secret window has no secrets, but who cares
The secret window is a very clever movie that I enjoyed a lot. Johnny Depp once again shows why he is one of the great actors of our time. He played this role very well as a writer who is struggling with his divorce from his wife. Depps wife, played by Maria Bello, has had an affair and is now with the man with whom she had the affair. Depp begins getting a visit from a Mississippi farmer named Shooter claiming Depp stole one of his stories and changed the ending. Without giving away too much the Man begins to torment Depp so he will admit to stealing his story.

The acting in this movie was very good as well as visualization. The person that plays shooter does a very good job. The is very predictable but that should detour you from getting this movie it is still good

Wait for the DVD
'Secret Window' wasn't as good as I expected, but that's just because it wasn't the film I thought it was going to be. The trailers for the movie make it look full of action, and very scary, which is slightly misleading. The film starts quite slow, but Johnny Depp manages to carry it well (with a less talented actor, the movie would probably have been 3 stars, maybe even lower). There were some frightening moments, but none that really affected me or that I remembered. In fact, the film was actually more gory than it was scary.

Johnny Depp's acting is, of course, superb which really brings the rating of the movie up. I actually enjoyed the comedic moments in the movie quite a bit more than the 'horrific' parts. I liked the plot, and the ending, but I found that I predicted the ending slightly earlier in the film than I usually do. I would probably recommend waiting and renting this film. It's much cheaper than spending what seems like a fortune nowadays to see it in theaters. Not...

World's Finest: Part...

Another great Superman volume
Like several other reviewers, I am looking forward to this release. I only recently finished Volume 1 of "Superman" and cannot wait for more episodes.

Just to clarify something a previous reviewer mentioned...the three-part episode "World's Finest" (cross-over with Batman) originally aired as three episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" and IS part of this show. The single-disc "Batman/Superman Movie" was released before WB started putting out season sets of "Batman" and "Superman."

I'm looking forward to the other Batman cross-over episodes, as well as appearances from Aquaman and Green Lantern in future volumes, as well as the great episodes coming in Volume 2.

no worries about missing episodes...
People have complained about "missing episodes" - don't worry, there are actually 18 more in the series which, based on the episode list of 18 in this volume, means we're looking at a volume 3 in the near future. Chronologically, this volume is right on track and the others will inevitably come.

Superman and Batman are such different characters, it's hard to "compare" the series as many reviewers simply prefer the Batman character, so they naturally like the Bat eps better. I do think some of Timm and Dini's most thoughtful work overall was on early episodes of the Batman animated series, but they've still given us the best version of Superman to hit the screen since Richard Donner made us believe a man can fly.

What Happens in Vegas

I want more Forever Young!
This was a great way to show the contrast in the two age groups. LOVED each and every character. Great show. Hope to see more episodes in the future.

Don't Mind the (Generation) Gap
I really enjoyed this brief series. 6 under 30's sharing a house with 6 over 70's. After initial distrust and tredidation these twelve housemates reached open- minded surprise insights. It was fun to watch them enjoying each other's company, sharing ideas, and having fun TOGETHER! I'm 62 and have a 72 yr old "forever young" brother and our late parents were born in 1905 and 1910. Mixing generations really works! I thank God my family exposed me to such an array of music, humor and sensibilities. I saw the same growth speeded up on this delightful show. Many of us fans who wrote in are not usually into reality shows. This one is a cut above and leaves you feeling good!

Watched Only One Episode
The premise of this reality show is good but can't see going very far with this type of show. We only watched one episode, so I may not be the one to give a good review of this show.

Cirkus Columbia (English Subtitled) [HD]

Excellent Movie Set in Pre-war Bosnia
Danis Tanovic has made a great, great movie. This is not the "in your face" cinema of the younger generation of ex-Yugoslavia filmmakers. This is a movie about loss and separation, what it means to be of different national identities, ideologies, and statuses within a divided, polarized country, and how the past needs to be worked for a better future.

The always, always great Miki Manojlovic stars as Divko, a Bosnian returning to his small village after 20 years living in exile in Germany. He returns home with plenty of money, a very young girlfriend, Azra (Jelena Stupljanin), and a cat (Bonnie); He believes money (German Deutschmarks) will take care of most of what he left behind. His wife, Lucija (Mira Furlan), and late-teens son, Martin (Boris Lar), are still living in the home he left behind, and he evicts them, leaving them to fend for themselves. The Tito-Serb army still is in control of the military, while the "fascistic" Bosnian nationalists are in control of...

wonderful film
A beautiful and sensitive story. Mira Furlan was amazing and definitely the lead role as far as I was concerned. There was humor, depth , suspense and sadness with a wonderfully touching end. I have already recommended it to friends and family.

NO CIRCUS

The Darkening

A MUST SEE!!
If you haven't seen this yet it is definitely one you will want to watch! My favorite thing about it was that it gave me that 80's thriller vibe, I'm a big fan of Nightmare on Elm Street and this is one I can say I like just as much or MORE!

Keeps You Wondering...
I recently watched this movie with my mom, and we both really enjoyed it. From the very beginning I noticed that the camera quality was extraordinary for an indie film. The amount of work that went into this production really stands out with the attention to detail, dialogue, and score. The greatest mark of a scary movie happened toward the beginning when my mom looked at me and said "I'm going to have nightmares!" It was at that point that we both smiled and knew this movie was going to be of great quality, and not hokey or amateur. The movie kept us guessing right through the twist at the very end. An impressive production - you will not be disappointed!

Suspense Horror Thriller That Will Make You Jump!
The Darkening movie is a suspense horror/thriller that had me jumping several times during the film. The special effects and great use of music provided an atmosphere that had me wondering how this was a low-budget indie film. I wasn't able to watch it in the theaters when it released last year, but glad I was able to enjoy it at home in the dark :)

Show 26 [HD]

Love this show!
Russell Brand is pure genius, and his comedy style is perfect. This show is fantastic and I enjoy every minute of it.

Funny audience interactions
I think this show continues to get better and funnier. Brand is best when he is playing with normal people- his improv is great. The final segment with the audience members was really funny, especially that cute kid , Cole. Who they should get to be a regular. Brand giving relationship advice is just crazy and it would be a wonderful ongoing segment! Fun stuff,

Wasn't What I Thought BUT
This show is extraordinary! I love Russel Brand, he's a favorite comedian but I had no idea he could pull off something quite like this.

I thought it would be all stand up. I was wrong! Sure, there were bits but this show was more then "come watch Russel do stand up"

He even tries to take WBC! It was amazing to watch him take on those "people" and actually try to get an sensical answer of him. It was pure gold.

Keep it up Mr. Brand, and FX when is this coming out on DVD?

Carried Away/Monster in Charge [HD]

A "Roarsome" New Disney Junior Show!
My two daughters (ages 3 and 6) are Disney Junior kids. We have had a lot of luck over the years with some high quality Disney cartoons coming out for the younger kids on the Disney Junior channel. We were really excited to see this new show come out recently. Right off the bat, they released a dozen or so shows very quickly which was nice. We have them all on our DVR at this point and the girls ask for them pretty regularly. My littlest one adorably calls it "Henry Higglymonster" because she gets the name confused with another old favorite, Higglytown Heroes.

The show takes place in the town of Roarsville. The show centers around Henry, a 5 year old child, who just happens to be a monster. Henry gets in lot ofsituations and adventures with his monster siblings (his brother Cobby, sister Summer, and baby brother Ivor) and friends. The situations are fun and silly and teach children how to solve problems and overcome obstacles along the way. In an early episode,...

Fun for Toddlers!
My son was glued to this cartoon at his doctors office. I found season one on amazon and he adores it. I really like that Henry has a can do spirit about all the situations that he finds himself in.

great cartoons
My daughter loves them. She is just three years old and she stays watching the whole show. I definitely recommend it for toddlers.

Amazing Race Season 11 (2007)

Go Pens
Im a huge fan of the show & have purchased all the available seasons from Amazon (what's the hold up? 22 seasons in & only 11 available) season 11 was a good season, picture & sound good but the 1st I've purchased that has a problem, the 2nd disc freezes 1/2 way thru & when it does unfreeze it's 3/4's the way over, I already threw out return papers & don't like having to return items anyways so my loss, if not for the freezing I'd give 5 stars, love reliving past seasons

Recycled contestants proving once again - recycling is good!
I was late getting to The Amazing Race and have been catching up for the last year on previous seasons. I was happy to see some old teams show up again in this season and unhappy to see others. What is it with Rob and Amber anyway? On Survivor several times and now twice on The Amazing Race. Cannot they get regular jobs??? At any rate, this season is just as fun and just as competitive as those seasons with new competitors. One team I was cheering for did something really nasty toward the end only to discover karma does have quite a (lasting) kick. Definitely a season that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Amazing Race: All Stars
What's with all the low reviews? My All Stars Edition came packaged perfectly and works great, however, it is a full screen release. I would never buy these normally, but it's all stars! It's like a must buy if you can't afford to buy all of em'. Plus I LOVE Charla and Mirna. LOL. 5 Stars.

Project Runway Season 11 Reunion Special [HD]

The Worst Season of Project Runway Ever!
I love Project Runway and have enjoyed the past 10 seasons. Sadly, I don't know what happened this season. It is truly awful! The designers are not up to the challenges and the clothes are hideous. The fact that Michael Kors is gone doesn't help matters. Heidi - what happened?

It's like a train wreck that I watch again and again
It's so bad, but so good. The guest judges this season are hilarious-- Bette Midler, Joan Rivers, and more. I'd watch this show just to see judge Zach Posen's smile and hear his funny comments. He alone inspires me to dress more creatively.

everyone works in teams all season
this team aspect is working ok for the earlier episodes. i have my doubts as to how well it will work when we are done eliminating the obviously weak. the three people eliminated so far had really bad outfits so it was not a surprise to see them go whether they were team members or not.

one of the strongest designers is daniel esquivel from austin, texas. not only is he wonderfully talented but he is courteous, amiable, helpful and supportive on his team plus displays leadership qualities. since the whole contest is now team based, he is a very serious contender as winner. the native american woman from the southwest also does very artistic work and is wonderful at fabric manipulation. she works ok on a team so may go the distance. although others are showing promise, these are the two standouts so far and they are on the same team.

tim gunn, nina garcia, and heidi are back but michael kors is not. i am not that upset by a new judge. yes, the new judge...

Lots of music:)
My three year old grandson loves "motor cross", we rented it just in case it was full of commentary and not a lot of action to keep his attention. He and I were thrilled that it was full of action set to, what I call rock, music. One song was "scremo" as he calls it which he yelled, " nana, uncles's song!" :) any way he watched it everyday. Cliff Richard - Live In Berlin

Cliff Richard "Live in Berlin" dvd
CAUTION! I originally was upset that I could not view this DVD because it is PAL and not NTSC. I am updating my review to say that I was able to watch it on the computer and not the DVD player and now have changed my rating from a one star to a five. Amazon still needs to change the listing as it says Region 1 (U.S, and Canada) but it is not. Unfortunately, I saw it was marked for the U.S. and I didn't notice it says PAL--PAL is not U.S., NTSC is U.S. Thanks to my cousin who suggested trying it on the computer instead!

Cliff in Berlin
Been a Cliff fan for over 55 years... I own just about anything he does, but this is a great DVD recorded in Berlin. It is a TV show with interview and him doing his hits up and until this was filmed. The production is brilliant. A must for any Cliff fan especially as so little is been released on him lately. The price is definitely worth it !

Will NOT Play on USA DVD Players
I do not want to affect the rating on this item, but it is very important that USA customers realize that this DVD will NOT play on USA DVD players, even though it is described as a Region 1 (USA) disc. That's because it is also listed as PAL format (while NTSC is the format used in the USA). Confusing, huh? So unless you are SURE that you have a DVD player that will play PAL format as well as NTSC, I recommend that you do NOT purchase this item, or else you will land up having to return it. BUYER BE WARE.

Occupy Love [HD]

Good documentary but....
This a good documentary, with an interesting subject. Well done with good photography and movement, interesting people talking but in my opinion lacks a bit in substance. If one is interested in the movement this film doesn't add much to the information that is already out there, but It's good to spread the message to less informed people though.

Occupy Love
I had a screening of Occupy Love in southwestern Arizona. It was well received and created a lot of thought about how to heal ourselves and Mother Earth. Through love it can be done. Worth watching! In fact, it is a must see!!!

Focuses on what's truly important about the human journey.
It offers hope and inspires new possibility. I loved the way the director focused on how art played played to communicate love and big truths.

Really good, heartfelt film
Two people who haven't seen each other since high school get stuck together at an airport until a storm clears, and we follow them from superficial first impressions to alcohol-induced soul barring revelations. The writing, acting and direction were all really good. I was thoroughly entertained and moved by the film. I'd highly recommend it.

Layover, a surprising short subject
I enjoyed this film because the acting is excellent, the camera captures the mood and nuances and the body language expressed by both leads is so informative. The ending is charged with emotion. Kudos to April Wright foe excellent direction.

Lucifer's Unholy Desire

Lucifer's Unholy Desire
I learned about this movie when I found an internet article about it long before it was released. The article described it as being a "Christian horror movie" with strong sexual themes. Indeed, the content is surprisingly intense for something that was described as "Christian." There are several sex scenes, although no actual nudity is shown. The "f-bomb" is dropped over 100 times. As for the storyline, a Pentecostal minister/exorcist is called to investigate the mysterious death of a fellow minister's wife. He discovers a young woman possessed by a succubus, a demon that uses sex to control people. Those around the possessed woman are in danger of being picked off one by one, and the exorcist must unravel the mystery before more are killed. The movie's message of hope and redemption is quite strong, although not all characters will have a happy ending. A couple will die in rather bloody ways, although this is not exceptionally gruesome. I was impressed, however, with how...

An interesting take on possession for a low budget film
This film attempts more than it should, but that should be praised. The first three minutes are weak but that changes the moment Andrew Roth comes on the screen. Roth does yeoman's work as Jacob Wilcox and his performance is steady throughout. Camera Chatham Bartolotta and Shawn Shelpman are scene stealers but both have moments that are uneven.
Emily Cordes in the starring role is amazing at times, but has weak moments. Her odd body movements are nonverbal clues to the demonic influences effecting her.
Cody Knotts shows the problems of directing and acting. His performance is one note, crying.
Ray Wade is understated and yet very realistic. Frank Yuvan Sr. has movie star looks, but is wooden in his performance.
Doug Bradley does yeoman's work as a voice over and provides some needed star power.
The visuals are better than expected for a film with so low a budget. The film makers were obviously attempting to make a serious film.
If you watch it, just...

So bad... it's bad.
Okay, so don't get me wrong, this movie is horrible. That said, I got some perverse pleasure out of seeing how bad it really was. I mean, I think if you handed me a good quality video camera and gave me a month to throw something together, this is probably the kind of crap I would come up with. I'd like to think that I could do better, but that would probably require a budget for some music, some actors (this film only had one, the male lead), and at least 6 weeks.

The Sins of the Father

Redundant, little character development
The conflict (basis for all plots) is always the same:
* Arthur Pendragon is conflicted with his father Uthur Pendragon over loyalty vs. what his feels is right.
* Uthur Pendragon is a static character (almost comically) who demands loyalty, hates/abhores magic.
* Gaias (Merlin's mentor) evolves very rapidly into becoming Merlin's-father figure but then stays the same.
* Morgana (Uthur's charge/ward) evolves over time but almost never shows any internal conflict over those changes (which any real person would exhibit).
* Guenevere changes and starts off as obsequious mouse to a woman with mettle, but again, her evolution is sporadic and inconsistent.
* Merlin is the only interesting character. Very sympathetic to the viewer, he gains attention and captivates the audience throughout the seasons. He adapts, changes, grows with each new episode. That doesn't seem intuitive to the viewer. We all like to see people improve from hour to hour, from month to...

Merlin's Magic Returns (SPOILERS)
The second series is even better than the first, bringing more depth to the characters. You have Merlin falling in love for the first time with the Lady of the Lake, an Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot love triangle, Uther marrying a Troll! Arthur meeting his dead Mother, The Witchfinder accusing Merlin, Morgana & Gaius of using magic. Morgana realises that she really does have the power of magic & starts using it for 'The Dark Arts', the reappearence of the mysterious Mordred & Morgause & The Great Dragon demanding even more & more of Merlin! In the series finale Merlin finally gets to meet his Father whom he assumes is dead after what his Mother has previously told him & finds out that he is 'The Last Dragon Lord' only then to have him cruelly taken away from him. Merlin inherits the title of Dragon Lord which develops more in season 3 when he can command the Great Dragon to do his bidding.

I have bought both music CD's that accompany the series they are dramatic, haunting &...

A consistantly engaging series.
I have bought the first two seasons of Merlin and he is a remarkable person. Many people with his powers wouldn't have the patience to serve the sometimes slow-witted Arthur but time after Merlin perseveres. I'll probably buy the third season in the near future.

Newhighers

funny film
I enjoyed filming the move with every one and it was great working with the stars of the movie too.

HILARIOUS!!!!
This movie was hilarious! It reminded me of the original Friday (with Chris Tucker and Ice Cube). The plot was simple and straightforward (but with an interesting twist)! Two guys get a new job as wait-staff in a new restaurant. The restaurant ensemble is itself a great cast with great actors. And of course: Any movie that can be analogized to Friday has to have plenty of weed jokes!

All round, I'd highly recommend this movie.

Very Funny
I laughed, I laughed, I laughed, and I laughed. Right from the beginning all the way to the end. I love that It just wasn't funny, but It has an awesome plot. JK Stone was great in his character as Mike, and the staring characters Libby Hook, Greig, and the lady waitress, smoking weed in the broom closet. looking for a laugh, and some seriousness in on funny movie, Newhighers.

Brothas & Sisters

What the heck, Sony?
I understand that doing a DVD-R release for some shows is perhaps the most economically feasible option. FOX's Breaking In, for example, never got a good running, and few people even know of its existence, so I get why it was released on DVD-R rather than on the more reliable, more durable, and more standard DVD. Happy Endings, however, is an already established show, one with prior seasons on regular DVDs. Why can't a sense of continuity occur with the series? Why can't it have a more official, legitimate release? For a company that claims to have fought so hard for its renewal, this DVD shows nothing of the sort. It already has its own cult following, critical acclaim, and consistent moments of genuinely great television.

Five stars for the show, one star for the product. Three as an average.

I'm highly upset and disappointed with the decision to release it on DVD-R.

Not worth the price
I am a big fan of the show Happy Endings. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable price for the third season on a physical media. $40 for a DVD-R is not reasonable. If Sony wants to gouge people who would like to be able to watch the show while away from an internet connection, well, I'll just find ...alternate... ways of watching the show when I have the urge and not part with my money.

Frustrating!
$40 for a burn-on-demand release? If the sales numbers on the first two seasons don't justify a proper release for season 3, how can they expect a $40 set to sell many copies at all? You'll get less people than ever buying this one.

I was afraid they weren't going to release S3 at all, but I didn't see this wrinkle coming. I want to wait for a price reduction, but it's pretty unlikely to happen, isn't it?

Five stars for the show.

Lost on the Bohemian Road

great movie. even if i am in it.
Very cool movie. Sean hosseli was my neighbor when he wrote this movie. So he gave me a bit part. Then rewrote it with my name instead of the original character. It was shot around the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area. With alot of local help in both production and acting. By the way I was "Duddly" in the movie.

Mesmerizing
This is one of my favorate movies ever! It has a dream-like quality and the characters were real for me. I identified with them and the film connected me back to my youth.

Lost on the Bohemian Road
The first time I saw this film I was in awe. It truly is visually stunning. The film works as a piece of art, its as though you are watching moving photography with lights and meanings hidden in the shadows of this movie. Definately a hidden gem that deserves more attention than it ever received.

Shanghai Noon / Shanghai Knights (2-Movie Collection) [Blu-ray]

The "Noon" Is Blu, And The "Knight" Is, Too
"Shanghai Noon" has long been one of my favorite American Jackie Chan films, featuring not only classic Chan combats but also a partnership with a non-Asian actor that is lively and enlightening instead of depressing and demeaning; it was directed by a JC fan who was invested in presenting the Hong Kong Jackie persona that the world loves in a more Hollywood format that American audiences were comfortable with, and Tom Dey absolutely got it right.

With a witty "fish out of water" story that pays homage to the great Westerns (from glossing "High Noon" to naming Chan a Chinese sound-alike for John Wayne) while playing havoc with the genre's conventions, and a great cast from both East and West (supporting standouts include HK martial arts actor Yu Rong-guan using an array of Chinese weaponry, American Roger Yuan playing an Imperial villain, and Xander Berkeley as an ethically challenged lawman), the film manages to be exciting, endearing, amusing,...

"Shanghai Noon" was a much better film than it sequel "Shanghai Knights" but both are entertaining popcorn action films.
With the success of "Rush Hour" in 1998, more films to showcase martial arts movie star Jackie Chan continued well into the 2000′s and this time around, pairing him with actor Owen Wilson in the martial arts action comedy western film titled "Shanghai Noon".

Earning over $99 million in the box office, the film featured the filmmaking debut of Tom Dey ("Showtime", "Failure to Launch") and feature a screenplay written by writing duo Miles Millar and Alfred Gough ("Spider-Man 2″, "I Am Number Four", "Smallville").

The film featured an all-star cast with Jackie Chan ("Rush Hour" films, "The Karate Kid", "Shinjuku Incident"), Owen Wilson ("Midnight in Paris", "Wedding Crashers", "Cars" films), Lucy Liu ("Kill Bill: Vol. 1″, "Lucky Number Slevin", "Charlie's Angels"), Roger Yuan ("Batman Begins", "Skyfall", "Syriana") and Xander Berkeley ("Terminator 2: Judgment Day", "Air Force One", "Gattaca", "Taken").

With the success of "Shanghai Noon"...

Great Movie Combo
I love the two movies together! Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson make a great pair in this spoof on the old westerns. Jackie Chan is excellent as Chon Wang an obvious play on "John Wayne" his Asian style "gymnastic fighting" is fun to watch and lends itself well in this comedy. Owen Wilson, as Roy O'Bannon, is the perfect comedic match to Jackie Chan's character.

Bled White

Run, because these zombies can really run.
Bled White Not a typical zombie movie. These guys can run. Good story line. Many small stories that come together in the end. Enough scares and edge of your seat moments to make a good horror movie. Found it entertaining. Characters pull you in. They have enough faults to be believable. You see how each handles the situations of a world gone mad,and you hope that they will somehow survive.

New and unique
I was forced by circumstance to watch this movie over the course of several days and each day I grew in interest. For a movie to hold and even grow my interest is pretty good.

Only if you like anything ZOMBIE
I'd give them all an A for effort on a small budget. Some of the actors were terrific and some terrible but they all tried and that's appreciated.I watch anything zombie and have seen much worse and much better and put this in the middle as it did create an atmosphere of dread.
