Awesome!
Bunohan gives insight to the reality of life within a culture of tradition and superstition. When three brothers all end up in Bunohan, the their different personalities show us the contrast between modernity and tradition. The film deals with issues of loyalty and revenge, as well as emotional memories from the past. This film is a beautiful portrayal of the daily life of the rural community with events that pull you in and keep you watching. The incredible cinematography emphasizes the reality of the characters and each situation they come across. I enjoyed watching this film a lot!
BUNOHAN: An Exercise In Just 'What' Exactly?
Here's the thing about having ghosts and/or spirits serve as characters: unless the story goes to great lengths to humanize whatever their cause or struggle is, then there's very little likelihood that the audience will identify with that plight. Patrick Swayze's character in GHOST still felt the yearning's of his Earthly but immortal love; through those emotions, viewers identified with him, and the film worked. But having an otherworldly figure essentially commenting on the familial and/or sociocultural trends in rural Malaysia? Yeah. Good luck with that.

If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few modest hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)
